Tree doctor🌳🥸 special educational needs Teaching Assistant 🤠 & all round hyperactive bundle of fun. Ryan is new to our team this year & he's arrived with a bang!

Growing up, not feeling like he fitted into the mainstream classroom way of teaching, he instead enjoyed hobbies such as skydiving, bungee jumping & deep sea diving.
Ryan forged a path lead by his own personal interests, the desire to try new things & most importantly to enjoy what he's doing!

The need to be outdoors lead Ryan to study Arboriculture & Forest Management, particularly focussing on tree health & soil science, but in the background he still had a strong desire to work alongside people, so he started to study Child & Adolescent mental health issues.
He'd felt so misunderstood & misdirected during his school years that he wanted to make a difference to children in the same situation, so he gaining a qualification & started working as a special educational needs Teaching Assistant.

But then what!?...

Well, he's found a way to merge his desire to be outdoors with his interest in working alongside people.
When talking about his new job, he says... "I enjoy seeing people explore the world & going further than they thought was ever possible. Your boundaries are as far as you push them".

Most recently, he's been taking in parts of our beautiful Dartmoor National Park and helping others to train for the Hill & Moorland Leader qualification.
A fabulous hike from the town of Postbridge to the ancient Wistmans Wood, with some diligent mapwork in between has helped other instructors gain confidence jn themselves & their leadership abilities!

We're delighted his next step has been with us as an Outdoor Activity Instructor. The experience, knowledge, & understanding he brings to the team is an invaluable asset! Not to mention, our wood pile has never looked so well stocked 🪓😆

🧤🥶🐛🐝 WINTER PROJECTS 🐞🧣🦋🐜It's very quiet here throughout the late autumn/winter months... Let's face it, flopping into the Gorge at Meldon has slightly less appeal for most people when it's 4 degrees outside!Which means the team get the chance to be creative in other ways... SO! Here are the beginnings of our brand new wildlife area!The project was run by Devon Wildlife Trust who generously provided us with all the seeds, as part of the big Autumn sow! A mixture of Corn marigold, corn chamomile, common poppy, ox eye daisy & yellow rattle grass has been scattered! (see example picture of what we might expect in the Spring/Summer of 2026).We are hoping to create an area that's a safe habitat for lots of mini beasties to make use of & eventually incorporate a little bug hunting & creepy crawly education into our visitors time with us!It's still a work in progress, with plans for more bug hotels & feeding stations in the near future!Watch this space for updates throughout the year 🌱👌🏼#conservationeducation #devonwildlifetrust #backtonature #bugs #creepycrawlies #minibeasts #rewilding #devon #okehampton #habitats ... 😎 AURORA 😎What a spectacular sight we were treated too last night! Amazing seeing everyones images from across the county!FUN FACT! 🤓 The aurora is created by the suns solar wind (not just a breeze mind, blowing at 1.8 million mph 😳). It contains charged particles which collide with our atmosphere.
