All our guided walks are led by a qualified instructor, who will design a route to meet your needs, whether that is tracing a river to its source, looking at stone rows, settlements and sacred sites or simply exploring Dartmoor and its Tors.
For groups, we often suggest an evening walk, on the first night of a residential stay, partly as many young people have never experienced a walk without streetlights, but also to ensure that the participants are tired for a good first night sleep.
Self Guided Walking Routes
For those wanting a self-guided walk there are downloadable pdf’s with suggested routes from the YHA web-site. To download a pdf map for each route please click on the following links to YHA’s Festival of Walking web-site.
Tarka Trail
From the hostel turn right, go downhill and under the railway bridge.
Easy route, length 2.3 miles, takes 1h – 1h 45m
East Hill and East Okement River
A lovely walk on the edge of beautiful Dartmoor.
Moderate route, length 3.6 miles, takes 2h – 2h 45m
Belstone Tor
A great walk to open moorland hilltops, but the terrain can be challenging especially if the rocks are wet. This walk lies to the east of the Military ranges, but be careful not to stray. In general take care, as some parts the route are not way marked, so some skill required with navigation.
Challenging Route: 8 miles. 4 to 6 hours.
Night Walks
On the first night of a residential group stay we suggest a night walk to see the Dartmoor from a different perspective. There are several alternative routes that can be used to ensure that if you have more than 1 walk, you are not repeating the activities. On a clear night we can see the stars, and Dartmoor is one of the areas in the UK, suitable for Dark Sky status, recognising the lack of light pollution. For some students, this can become their first experience of walking where there are no street lights.
Day Walk
Various day walks are possible including Yes Tor and Highwill Hays. We would combine a guided walk with some navigation training.
Guided walks for travel trade groups are offered and can be customised to create point to point walks, with heritage interpretation along the way.
We can offer longer walks for groups wanting an overnight expedition onto Dartmoor. This can be either guided walks, or expeditions where we provide support for expeditions by young people, such as Duke of Edinburgh programmes, Outdoor Activity certificates, Ten Tors training.
